The concept, which uses a pump that uses electromagnetic force to draw air from a pipe, is part of an experiment that could eventually reduce noise by a factor of 50 or more.
The test was designed to test the pump in a vacuum and see how it behaves in the atmosphere.
But the team behind the research says they expect to be able to reduce the noise by more than that.
The pump, a cylindrical tube with a diameter of about 25 millimeters (about the size of a dime), was installed in a test chamber that was designed specifically for the experiment.
Researchers from the University of Southern California and the University at Buffalo are planning to continue testing the device in a laboratory before they begin testing it on real-world conditions.
In the coming months, the team plans to build more of the tube, and then expand the chamber into an indoor environment.
Researchers are also hoping to test whether the pump can reduce noise at a higher speed in the vacuum of space.
