Pedrolla, a Swiss company, has created a hydraulic pump that uses electric motor to pump air into a tank to lift water.
The pump is designed to remove water from a container and pump it back into the container as the water evaporates.
In theory, the pump is a simple and effective way to reduce the amount of water used by household appliances and water tanks.
But it has raised serious concerns among water experts.
A spokesperson for the Royal Society of Chemistry said the company had made “an error in judgment”.
“We believe the pump could actually lead to an increase in leaks,” said Professor John Burchill, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Warwick.
“In our experience, hydraulic pumps leak less than 1% of their output in the field.”
He said the pump “could have serious consequences” if it were to be used on a large scale.
“This is an incredibly important issue that should be addressed at the earliest opportunity,” he said.
